An easy homemade chocolate truffle recipe with refined, rustic flavor pairings.

We’ll admit it—we’ve never been ones to make a fuss over Valentine’s Day. But good chocolate? That’s something we’ll always celebrate. Rich truffles, thoughtful flavor pairings, and simple, everyday gestures of love are much more our style.

I’ve been making these easy homemade chocolate truffles since my college years, inspired by a classic Martha Stewart recipe. Over time, it’s become a go-to in our kitchen because it’s simple, reliable, and endlessly adaptable. Think of it as a foundational truffle recipe—one you can dress up or keep beautifully understated.

The base is rich and smooth, making it the perfect starting point for experimenting with flavor. Instead of sprinkles or sugary toppings, we like to lean rustic and let the chocolate shine. For this batch, we finished the truffles with edible rose petals, cracked pink peppercorns, and a touch of Himalayan salt. The result is a balanced mix of floral, warm spice, and just enough salinity to deepen the chocolate.

These make-at-home chocolate truffles are ideal for dinner parties, seasonal gatherings, or gifting. They can be prepared in advance and stored in the freezer, ready to serve whenever guests arrive or a chocolate craving strikes.

Scroll down for the recipe, and remember—some of the best ways to show love are simple, homemade, and meant to be shared. And there’s always room for more chocolate.

Instructions
  1. Place chocolate in a bowl (make sure to chop very fine for even melting). Bring cream, Grand Marnier, and salt to a simmer in a small saucepan. Pour over chocolate, and let stand for 2-3 minutes. Whisk until smooth.
  2. Pour chocolate mixture into an 8-inch square baking dish, and refrigerate until chilled, about 40 minutes.
  3. Scoop balls of chocolate mixture using a melon baller or tablespoon. Roll perfect balls with your hands and place on baking sheet with parchment paper. Then roll balls in toppings, until fully coated. Himalayan salt should be sprinkled with only a few pieces of salt.
  4. Place baking sheet with finished truffles in refrigerator to chill before serving or keep them in the freezer.
