Spring One Room Challenge: Week 1

Who’s ready for another room restoration at the farmhouse!? We’re excited to announce that we’ve been selected to participate in the Spring 2019 One Room Challenge. Follow along as we make over one room in just six weeks. My anxiety has already kicked in!

It all starts today as we give a much-needed make over to one of our bedrooms. As you may know, we live in a Dutch Colonial farmhouse built in 1800. The five-bedroom house was built by the Woodman family, proprietors at the time of the local grain and wood mill in our little hamlet. Mr. Woodman, his wife, and son also lived in New York City and owned a very successful chair manufacturing business in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Our chosen bedroom is one of the smallest in the house with only one window and a tiny closet, and original plaster walls and ceiling. Since moving into the house, the room has been used as a simple guest bedroom, outfitted with a full-size bed and small dresser. This bedroom has also been recently utilized as my storage room, filled with antique finds and tools. Pretty much a hot mess! Kris begged me to clean it out and now it’s time to get this room back into shape.

To start, we’ll address the room’s ugly acoustic tile (similar to the other four bedrooms). Did I mentioned, I hate acoustic tile!? There also seems to be a vinyl-type wallpaper over the plaster walls that is peeling off with ease. We hope and pray the plaster under the ceiling tiles is in okay shape. In the other bedrooms we’ve restored the plaster only needing some simple patching. The house was originally built with no electric, so each room has its unique quirks of where and how they were wired. We’re already aware that we need to drop down a light switch and outlet to standard height, move a ceiling light, and add a few floor outlets. Other than that, we aim to return the home’s overall historic esthetic to this room while adding our personal touches and style to create a space that is elegant yet comfortable.
